England, 1819

Lady Melissa Pateley is not having an easy time of it.

Her beloved husband Neville has died, and a fire at her London home has left her covered in scars.

If it wasn’t for a band of loyal servants, she’s not sure how she would survive.

Things take a turn for the worse when one day, Colonel Harry Gunn and his fellow soldier Zed break into her home, bundle her into a coach and kidnap her.

She is at a loss until she learns that Harry Gunn is the cousin of George Gunn, a man who has been stalking her for years, and that Harry’s Uncle John had warned him that as long as George is out there, Melissa is not safe.

Uncle John insists that Harry finds Melissa and keeps her safe.

But that very night George shows up at Harry’s home with Harry’s sister Lottie, who thinks Melissa and George would make a good match.

Perhaps Melissa would have been safer at home after all.

Yet even with her scars, she is certain that the handsome Colonel Gunn is attracted to her.

But of course, nothing is ever simple.

Startling revelations rip the family apart, causing everyone to question what they once held dear.

As Colonel Gunn goes in search of George and the truth, he has to wonder – had the keeping of secrets not marred more lives than the secrets would have destroyed?

This was a magical story that kept me spellbound from the first. Wonderful love story between a hero &heroine who were thrown together in an unlikely way but the chemistry was so strong that I couldn't imaging them parting. No sex scenes but their kissing scenes were very sensual and exciting. A family mystery, a real love story, an engaging hero, scarred, sharp heroine, wonderful characters in the families, servants & townspeople. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Seemed long in places, but really enjoyed reading it!
Regency romantic suspense at it's best! Excellent story line with nicely developed characters. The writing flows well and I will be reading more from the same author.
Very much in the style of Jane Austin, written in the language and manners of the time. I wanted more development of the plot. I hope this author keeps writing.
This was difficult to follow. The author's style of writing had me going over and over paragraphs as I tried to figure out just what the heck she was trying to convey.
A different heroine, one scarred externally and psychologically, who yet wins the love of one seeking to protect her from evildoers. A number of twists and turns keep this a compelling read.
This is an unusual Regency Romance, yes, the romance and era's manners are there, but there is also a strong suspense tension. It starts with the hero abducting the heroine. The hero, a former military man in the Peninsula war front, and heroine who is physically scarred, are both strong interesting characters.
I can't say I didn't enjoy the story, but I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There was so much in this story that just didn't make sense. Throughout the whole story there is talk of this lawyer who seems to think he is in control. Maybe if there were no male relatives, but there were. I don't want to list a bunch of spoilers, so if you don't mind things not making sense the overall story was good. Lot's of secrets between way too many people.
